the patio garden attracts critters...

this morning
I found this caterpillar leaving my baby lettuce plants

his stinging spines do hurt, I tried to be very careful,
but took one to the little finger of my right hand
(I took a antihistamine immediately
in case I should have an allergic reaction)

when the photo is enlarged
it can be seen that the spines are tipped with
something dark

he was only in "captivity" about 30 minutes

I gave him time to relax and start crawling around
(photographed him)
then returned him to the patio

  1. I can remember as a child, the cocoon, awaiting the arrival of a butterfly, one of life's little mysteries for young minds to ponder! What a thrill! I remember seeing one complete the transition!

  5. Hi Theanne ~~ I love the teddy bears, thank you. My apologies for not
posting your message, but I have misplaced it. Maybe next week.
The caterpillar is lucky to survive if he was eating your lettuce.
Take care my friend. Love, Merle.

  8. What an unusual and striking looking moth - I hope you do see the full cycle occur in your garden. Thanks for this - very interesting indeed. (Glad you suffered no ill-effects from the sting.)

  11. I've heard of catch and release before ;>).... Also Ios was an answer in one of my crossword puzzles this week... I think the clue said something like 'colorful moths' ... I'd never heard of them before - and now here it is again.

  12. I've always been fascinated by caterpillars and the way that they turn into moths or butterflies. Nature is very clever!

He is a fascinating colour and shape seen close up, I did not think they could bite or sting though, maybe you have a different breed of caterpillar to us?!
