if it's not tied down they'll steal it...

just how desperate is our economy?

when leaving the market the other day
I spied a rusty grate
and figured I'd get a shot of it

I noticed that the grate had a chain at one end
and thought about a newspaper article
I'd read a day or two prior

(a similar article, but not the one I originally read)

apparently people in the area are
stealing storm drain grates
and selling them to make a little money

wonder just how long the heavy duty chains
will keep the grates in place?
wonder just how much worse our economy
is going to get?

  1. They have been stealing them around Nashville also, so dangerous since pets have fallen into the storm drains..
I'm afraid it won't be long and they'll be cutting those chains off :(

  2. The chains are probably worth some money too, they would be getting a twofer!

  3. Sad isn't that our country has problems so bad that people are steeling even these.
We need a change and fast in our country.

  4. Not unique to your side of the world I'm afraid Theanne. Here, and I suspect most places, metal prices are at an all-time high and they are stealing everything they can get their hands on.
Once it was only the lead from church roofs, now they take everything they can carry.
Storm drains are just the tip of the iceberg!

  6. Last year our phones went down as the telephone lines had been stolen for the copper.

  7. Sad that people can put other people and animals in danger like that.

  8. It happened already well before the economy tanked. Need (or greed) is no justification for a lack of civic sense.

  11. How sad to think that we have to bolt things down these days to keep them from thieves. What is this world coming to?

  12. Yes, here in Spain are taken to the wires of the lamps.

  13. Yeah, this is a sad fact of life all over the USA. Anything heavy. The terrible thing is the city probably paid $200-$300 for the grate and broken up it will bring about $4 at most.

Thousands of A/C units are destroyed for $20.

What a shocking reminder of where we are. I hope someone can find an answer to our delimea.

  16. It's gotten so that if I hear a sound at night I wonder if someone is scavenging my AC.

  17. Lots of problems around Ft Myers too -- our boat club had the air conditioner stolen. I think there are some new FL laws about selling metal now (the guy who recycles stuff for our RV park was talking about it) -- I think the sellers have to leave an address and they don't get the money for a while so I guess they can make sure the stuff isn't stolen. I hope things turn around soon. (but it seems like there are always people more willing to break the law than to work.)

  18. Lepiej niech wisi ciężki łańcuch, niż ma być dziura do której ktoś może wpaść lub auto wjechać. U nas tez niestety kradną kratki. Pozdrawiam. *** Better to let them hang heavy chain, than to be a hole into which one can fall or auto enter. We also, unfortunately, stealing boxes. Yours.

  20. Oh no --it is so sad to read this! I often worry that people that steal things like this do it for drug money. Stay safe!
